How do body deformations reflect how we choose to show ourselves to the world ? How does this influence the way the outside world perceives us? This project explores the links between physical representations and community, identity.
Prosthesis explores a fictional civilization where social status is determined by subcutaneous implants. In this civilization, body modifications are considered desirable and even a marker of social rank. Immobilizing the body’s joints, these implants impose a hierarchy in which the wealthiest deform their bodies to pursue their ideal of beauty while losing their mobility. They are then served by those who can’t afford implants and retain their mobility, enslaved as servants.
It seeks to question how far we would go to correspond to the standards set, unquestionable and irrefutable.
Through an unknown and disturbing scientific installation about found bodies of this civilisation, Prosthesis aim to raise questions about our own tendency to fetishize, and what consequences this could lead to if we push the scenario to the point of absurdity.
This project features silicone prosthetics and modified X-Ray scans
